Gutter Guards

Gutter Guards

Gutter Guards are especially helpful during fall when all the leaves seem to just find its way into your gutter.  Gutter cleaning is very time consuming and can even be potentially dangerous.  This is the very same reason why companies have come up with gutter guards.  Before jumping right into the next sales person who offers this, here are some things you should take into consideration:

  • Cost and effectiveness.
  • Region you live or plan to live in.
  • Materials.
  • Appearance.
  • Ease of maintenance.

The primary materials used in making gutter guards are aluminum, copper, plastic, nylon, metal mesh, and foam.  Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.  For example, copper does not rust easily but it is expensive and difficult to install.

Aluminum is less expensive than copper but more expensive than plastic.  It lasts longer than plastic or foam but the downside is it is also quite difficult to install.  Plastic on the other hand is durable but cracks in cold regions.  Foam, nylon, and mesh are the ones more commonly used in gutter filter systems being less expensive but they do clog easier.

Gutter Guards are divided into two categories – screen sand covers.  Screens act as a filter keeping out large debris to allow much water to go through the gutters.  They are usually made of foam, aluminum, nylon or metal mesh.  They are very easy to install and much cheaper.

Covers sit atop the gutters primarily keeping all debris from going down the gutters so not so much water is allowed to enter.  They are usually made of metal or thick plastic.  They are definitely larger and harder to install.
